ACHF Milestones

1967:   Saved Church-Waddel-Brumby House, Athens’ oldest residence from demolition

1972:   Established Church-Waddel-Brumby House as a house museum and started the Athens Welcome Center

1974:   Saved the Franklin House from demolition

1978:   Nominated Cobbham and Downtown to the National Register of Historic Places

1980:   Restored and adapted Fire Hall No. 2 as Foundation headquarters and gallery

1983-4: Nominated nine historic districts to the National Register of Historic Places

1985:   Advocated for the passage of the Historic Preservation Ordinance for City of Athens

1990:   Hosted workshops to discuss planning alternatives for Downtown East area

1994:   Participated in re-design of The Classic Center, which saved Fire Hall No.1

1994:   Assisted in saving the Wray-Nicholson House from demolition

1996:   Established the Revolving Fund to protect at-risk historic properties

1996:   Worked with UGA and Athens community to preserve Tanner Lumber

1997:   Participated in development of Athens-Clarke Comprehensive Plan

1997:   Acquired and developed Classic City Tours as a heritage tourism educational vehicle

1997:   Worked with UGA and Athens community to save & relocate the Red Barn

1998:   Began Historic House Museum Association

1998-9: Assisted 5 neighborhoods with local historic district designation

1999:   Co-sponsored with A-CC re-dedication of Wray-Nicholson House

2000:   Established Hands on Athens Program

2001:   Athens-Clarke County Bicentennial Celebration

2001:   Transfer of Ware-Lyndon House decorative arts collection to ACHF

2002:   Saved the Adcock Building from demolition

2003:   Completed Athens Welcome Center SPLOST project

2003:   Established Black History Month Tours (CCT)

2004:   Played a principal role in establishing and planning CAPPA (Community Approach to Planning Prince Avenue)

2006:   Completed restoration of historic Church-Waddel-Brumby House Museum/Welcome Center

2006:   Successfully completed expansion of Downtown Athens National Register Historic District

2006:   Successfully nominated Downtown Athens Historic District for local designation

2007:   Celebrated Foundation’s 40th anniversary

2007:   Athens Historic House Museum Association published Museum Mile tour brochure

2007:   Completed feasibility study for Oconee Street School/ACTION Building

2008:   Successfully nominated Reese Street Historic District for local designation

2008:   Athens Historic House Museum Association held inaugural Holiday Spirits tour of the four house museums featuring original historic vignettes.

2009:   Successfully nominated Athens for designation as one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destination.

2009:   Celebrated 10th annual Hands On Athens

2009:   Launched Athens Heritage Walks, a new guided tour series

2010:   Successfully nominated Milledge Avenue Historic District for local designation

2010:   Started the Athenaeum Club, a historic preservation social club.

2011:   Launched Preservation Matters, a new education series.

2012:   Conducted comprehensive one-day symposium about the endangered, historic Southern Mill property.

2013:   Assisted with successful nomination of Buena Vista Historic District for local designation

2013:   Launched new format for Preservation Awards with community-wide appeal.

2014-15:  Raised over $60,000 to stabilize and preserve historic Beech Haven Summer House and camel-back bridge; formed Friends of Beech Haven.

2015:   Established ACHF 50th Anniversary Committee.
