Athens’ Haunted History Walking Tour

History, haunts, legends, ghostly apparitions, cold spots, tragic lovers, restless Confederate soldiers and unearthed coffins. Folklore and history come alive beneath the Greek columns and magnolias of the Classic City.

Since being founded in 1801, Athens’ rich history has provided accounts of strange events and ghostly experiences. Follow your guide on a journey of Athens’ darker history. On this two-hour tour of downtown Athens and UGA’s North Campus, you will hear tales of spirits, hauntings, superstitions, mysteries, murders, suicide and other legends of the Classic City.

Your tour guides:

Carol Bishop is a lifelong resident of Athens who has worked at the UGA Main Library for over 20 years. She received her BA from UGA and has a Master’s in Library and Information Science through Valdosta State University. A Certified Archivist, she currently works in the University of Georgia Archives, a part of the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where she answers reference questions, processes collections and creates exhibits pertaining to UGA’s history. She has always had an interest in the subject of ghosts. In the late 1990s, she was one of the founding members of a ghost-hunting group that investigated suspected paranormal occurrences around the Athens and Atlanta area.

Rick Rose recently retired as chair of the Theater Department at Piedmont College in Demorest. He has an extensive background in theater and education, earning his bachelor’s degree in English education and his master’s degree in theater from Florida State University. He taught theater and set design for 12 years at various colleges before earning his Ed.D. in higher education from the University of Georgia. He retired from UGA as the assistant vice president for student affairs before beginning another career at Piedmont College. He has enjoyed many roles in Athens’ productions and is a long time member of the Town and Gown Players.
