The charrette highlighted the many ways that the Southern Mill property could be repurposed for a new life. In order for the historic buildings to fulfill a new purpose, immediate action is needed for the property:
Current structural analysis by an inspection/engineering consultant with confirmed experience in large scale historic property redevelopment projects.
Deterioration must be arrested and building should be stabilized and “mothballed”: Insects and vermin eliminated, vagrants deterred, and water penetration from above and below prevented.
Conditions of the façade easement should be resolved with owner, real estate agents and ACHF legal committee.
New marketing strategy for the property should build upon results of the symposium and charrette in order to attract the interest of a sensitive development team. The full recommendations and plans developed during the charrette were used to enhance the information on this website for interested citizens and potential redevelopment partners.
